AWS Well-Architected Review

This brochure summarises the process of an AWS Well-Architected Review.

AWS Well-Architected Review

AWS Well-Architected Review

The Well-Architected Framework is based on five pillars — operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, and cost optimisation.

The Framework provides a consistent approach to evaluate your workloads against AWS best practices and help build secure, high-performing, resilient, scalable, and efficient infrastructures for your applications and workloads.

Operational Excellence

The operational excellence pillar focuses on running and monitoring systems to deliver business value, and continually improving processes and procedures. Key topics include managing and automating changes, responding to events, and defining standards to successfully manage daily operations.

Security

The security pillar focuses on protecting information & systems. Key topics include confidentiality and integrity of data, identifying and managing who can do what with privilege management, protecting systems, and establishing controls to detect security events.

Reliability

The reliability pillar focuses on the ability to prevent, and quickly recover from, failures to meet business and customer demand. Key topics include foundational elements around setup, cross-project requirements, recovery planning, and how we handle change.

Performance Efficiency

The performance efficiency pillar focuses on using IT and computing resources efficiently. Key topics include, selecting the right resource types and sizes based on workload requirements, monitoring performance, and making informed decisions to maintain efficiency as business needs evolve.

Cost
Optimisation

Cost Optimisation focuses on avoiding unnecessary costs. Key topics include, understanding and controlling where money is being spent, selecting the most appropriate and correct number of resource types, analysing spend over time, and scaling to meet business needs without overspending.

AWS Well-Architected Review Credits

AWS will provide customers with $5000 in AWS Usage Credits when they leverage an approved AWS Well-Architected Partner like Silicon Overdrive to improve a workload.

AWS Credits Terms & Conditions

AWS Well-Architected Review credits are valid for 6 months.

AWS credits are not valid for any fees or charges for Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances, Amazon Mechanical Turk, AWS Marketplace, Amazon Route 53 domain name registration or transfer, or any upfront fee for any service.

How It Works

Our engineers will run an AWS Well-Architected Review with your team, using the AWS Well-Architected
Tool.

If you have multiple workloads, a Well-Architected Review can be conducted for each workload.

AWS Well-Architected Review Process

Preparing for the AWS Well-Architected Review

Silicon Overdrive will conduct a Trend Micro Cloud
One ™ – Conformity security and compliance assessment, with reporting, in preparation for the AWS Well-Architected Review.

Trend Micro Cloud One ™ – Conformity scans your account against 750+ cloud infrastructure configuration best practices.

The reporting from the assessment will include AWS Well-Architected and GDPR (POPIA) reports. Further reporting options we can provide include, ISO 27001, PCI DSS, HIPAA and NIST. These reports will allow you to understand your compliance score and what improvements can be made to reduce your risk.

During the AWS Well-Architected Review

Our team will schedule and conduct an AWS Well-Architected Review.

This involves a call with your team for 2 – 3 hours to run through the AWS Well-Architected Tool questions.

The Well-Architected Review Tool will output high and medium risk improvements.

Proposal, Submission & Authorisation

Silicon Overdrive will submit a proposal to you to implement the high-risk item improvements. 

This will be discussed with you on a call.

Thereafter, you can select the improvements and tasks to be assigned to the Silicon team for implementation.

Please note that AWS requires a minimum of 25% of the HRI (high-risk items) to be remediated by a Well-Architected Partner for you to be eligible for the $5000 in AWS Usage Credits

The cost of the Trend Micro Cloud One ™ – Conformity assessment and the AWS Well-Architected  Review will be included in the proposal. 

Project Plan & Remediations

Once the proposal has been approved, we will generate a project plan to include the high-risk item improvements which you have chosen.

Implement Remediations

We will then implement the selected high-risk item remediations and improvements. 

Submit Improvements
to AWS

AWS requires a minimum of 25% of the HRI (high-risk items) to be remediated by us for you to be eligible for the $5000 in AWS Usage Credits

Once the minimum HRI improvements have been implemented, Silicon Overdrive will then submit the AWS Well-Architected Review Remediation Milestone update to AWS. 

Complete AWS Customer Satisfaction Survey

AWS will then email you an AWS Customer Satisfaction Survey (CSAT) to be completed.

Please notify the Silicon projects team once you have submitted the CSAT to AWS.

After the AWS Well-Architected Review

AWS will email you a promo credit code for $5000 in AWS Usage Credits, within a few business days, after they received your CSAT submission. You can redeem this credit against any AWS account.

If your account is linked to Silicon Overdrive, we can apply the credits to offset your AWS usage against all of your linked AWS accounts.

Invoicing for Remediations

Silicon Overdrive will then invoice you for the remediations which you authorised and we have implemented. 

Please note that the $5000 in AWS credits are only applicable to AWS usage. Any fees owed to Silicon Overdrive are for your account.
