Please Note

The 6000VA and 10000VA UPS devices require 3rd party certified electricians to do the installation of the UPS and on the dedicated circuit board and provide a certificate once completed. The reason for this is these UPS devices require an input power greater than the output of an average household wall plug. So, if one was to plug this in it will most likely overload the DB board as well as the plug itself.

The Input

Online

It gets direct power supply from the input into the inverter, which then charges the batteries and holds the load simultaneously. Therefore there is no interruption to the power supply during a power outage.

Offline

It gets direct power supply from the input that is then sent to the inverter which then charges the batteries. The load is carried by the direct power supply from the input when the power is on and so in this case the inverter is only used to hold the load when there is a power failure, there is a small few millisecond delay where there is no power as the device switches to the inverter and batteries.

icons-02

Operating Temperature

Online

Since the inverter is working full time the operating temperature of the device will always be reasonably high. The number of devices on the UPS will also have an impact in operating temperature. Therefore UPS devices should always be kept in places with high airflow for adequate cooling.

Offline

Since the offline UPS only uses the inverter during a power failure its general operating temperature outside of a power failure will be lower. The device should still be kept in a well-ventilated area for adequate cooling.

icons-03

Cost

Online

This kind of UPS requires a larger amount of working parts to carry out its function which ultimately pushes the cost up.

Offline

This kind of UPS requires less parts to carry out its function therefore the costs are lower.

icons-04

Battery Usage

Online

It uses its battery throughout the time when the electronic devices are in use. Therefore, the battery is used constantly.

Offline

It only uses the battery during a power failure. Therefore, the battery is rarely used.

icons-06

Extreme Voltage Fluctuations

Online

It is designed to handle extreme voltage fluctuations. Such conditions are expected if you require this kind of UPS. Due to the fact that the online UPS is always in operation, voltage fluctuations from the input power supply, have no negative effects on your devices or the UPS itself.

Offline

The more the voltage fluctuations, the more the offline UPS is used. A frequent switching between the batteries and main power due to voltage fluctuations could lead to switching delays. This is dangerous for sensitive electronics and could also ultimately reduce the UPS overall performance.

When to Use?

Online

Use this kind of UPS when you require it to power sensitive electronic devices for a longer duration of time and if the main power supply in your area fluctuates rapidly.

Offline

Use this kind of UPS if you are looking for a cost-effective solution and are working in an environment where power supply is generally stable.
