Douglas Green Bellingham (DGB) is one of South Africa’s leading wine and spirits producers, with roots tracing back to 1938 when Douglas Green established his first business in Paarl. Today, DGB’s portfolio spans some of the Cape Winelands’ most recognized brands, including Boschendal, Bellingham, Franschhoek Cellar, Backsberg, and Fryer’s Cove, alongside a range of distributed spirits. Headquartered in Midrand, DGB supplies major retail chains across South Africa and exports to international markets, making reliable, high-volume trade operations central to how the business runs.
For a business operating at the scale of DGB, the volume and complexity of commercial document exchange with major retailers is significant. Purchase orders, invoices, and claims flowing between DGB and its trading partners relied heavily on manual processes, including email correspondence, spreadsheet management, repeated data capturing, and time-consuming reconciliations. This created operational friction at multiple points: delays in order processing, a high risk of capturing errors, and substantial administrative burden on teams across the business.
Compounding this, several of DGB’s key retail trading partners, including major grocery chains operating across South Africa, had made EDI compliance a contractual requirement. The business had to modernize, and it had to do so while maintaining the continuity of day-to-day operations.
DGB also recognized an opportunity: not just to meet compliance requirements, but to move away from a competitor’s solution toward a more capable, flexible integration partner who could grow alongside the business.
DGB’s leadership understood that piecemeal fixes would not address the underlying challenge. The organization needed a robust integration framework, one that could standardize how it communicated with trading partners, reduce manual dependency, and scale as new retail buyers were onboarded over time.
Rather than building an internal integration capability, DGB made the decision to partner with Silicon Overdrive, a specialist IT Managed Service Provider with deep expertise in EDI implementation. This partnership model allowed DGB’s teams to remain focused on core operations while Silicon Overdrive managed the technical delivery. It was a deliberate choice to invest in long-term operational capability, not just solve an immediate compliance problem.
Silicon Overdrive implemented a comprehensive EDI solution that fundamentally restructured how DGB exchanges critical business documents with its retail trading partners. The integration replaced the fragmented manual workflow with an automated, system-to-system flow of purchase orders, invoices, and claims, processed in real time, directly within DGB’s existing business systems.
Key to the approach was creating a standardized integration framework rather than one-off connections for each retailer. This architecture allowed DGB to bring Pick n Pay, Shoprite, and Makro live efficiently and establishes the foundation for faster onboarding of Spar, Food Lovers Market, and Boxer in 2026.
The solution automated processes that had previously consumed significant staff time: document validation, manual capturing, reconciliations, printing, and email follow-ups. In doing so, it freed operational teams to redirect their focus toward customer service, strategic planning, and higher-value activities.
The impact of DGB’s EDI transformation is felt across the business:
Operational efficiency at scale. Manual processing across key operational areas was significantly reduced. Turnaround times on purchase orders, invoices, and claims improved, while the risk of capturing errors was substantially lowered, eliminating the rework and dispute resolution that had previously absorbed team capacity.
Compliance and commercial readiness. DGB is now fully EDI-compliant with its major retail trading partners, satisfying contractual requirements and strengthening its commercial relationships with some of South Africa’s largest grocery chains.
A scalable integration platform. Instead of managing a different process for each trading partner, DGB now operates from a single, consistent integration framework. Onboarding new buyers is faster, less resource-intensive, and no longer requires significant internal IT effort. A critical advantage as DGB prepares to extend EDI to three additional retailers in 2026.
Greater data confidence. With information flowing directly between systems in real time, teams across DGB operate with greater accuracy and visibility, reducing the delays, discrepancies, and miscommunications that manual workflows inevitably introduce.
Reduced administrative complexity. By removing repetitive manual tasks from daily workflows, DGB’s operational teams gained capacity to focus on activities that directly support business performance and growth.
DGB’s EDI rollout is not a completed project; it is a growing capability. With Spar, Food Lovers Market, and Boxer integrations planned for 2026, DGB is on track to extend automated, compliant document exchange across its full retail trading partner network. The scalable framework Silicon Overdrive has put in place means each new integration will be faster and more straightforward than the last.
As DGB continues to grow its retail footprint, the EDI platform provides the operational infrastructure to support increased transaction volumes without the need for significant additional administrative resources.
