Semper – Azure Front Door Assessment and Re-architecture

About the Customer

Semper delivers an advanced Property Management System (PMS) to the global hospitality industry, featuring a comprehensive toolkit to elevate the success of your business, establish strong management controls across all operations, and seamlessly integrate with your accounting system.

The Challenge

Semper aimed to enhance their web application’s performance and security by leveraging Azure Front Door. The primary objective was to create a single point of entry to the nearest application region, ensuring an optimal user experience while maintaining traffic within the Azure backbone.

The Solution

To achieve this, Silicon Overdrive began by configuring Azure Front Door. Our engineers established a Front Door profile to manage traffic efficiently and set up a frontend host to serve as the single point of entry. Backend pools were created for web applications hosted in West Europe and South Africa’s northern regions, ensuring load balancing and failover capabilities to maintain high availability.

In terms of network and DNS configuration, we implemented vNet peering between Azure regions to facilitate seamless network connectivity and ensure low-latency communication between resources in different regions. We integrated web applications with virtual networks to enhance security and performance, enabling secure communication between web apps and other Azure resources.

To further secure the web applications, we configured private endpoints, restricting access to the Azure backbone and reducing exposure to the public internet. Additionally, we set up a private DNS zone for private endpoints to manage DNS resolution within the virtual network, ensuring reliable and secure name resolution for web applications.

The Outcome

The project resulted in significant improvements in performance for Semper, with users experiencing faster load times due to optimized routing and reduced latency. Security was enhanced through the use of private endpoints and DNS configurations, which minimized exposure to potential threats. High availability was ensured through load balancing and failover mechanisms, providing continuous availability of web applications.
