The Challenge

As part of their services, LUMA Law offers LUMABot, a user-friendly AI-powered legal chatbot providing free legal information and answers to basic legal questions, and access to qualified legal professionals for efficient and cost-effective legal assistance.

LUMA Law had a requirement to put additional guardrails and processes in place to improve their customer offering and better align themselves with AWS Cloud best practices.

The Solution

LUMA Law contacted Silicon Overdrive, an AWS Advanced Partner, to conduct a Well-Architected Framework Review (WAFR).

The AWS Well-Architected Framework is a set of best practices for designing and operating reliable, secure, efficient, and cost-effective systems in the cloud. It provides a consistent approach to evaluate architectures and implement scalable designs. The framework is built around six pillars: operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability. Together with the LUMA Law’s technical team, Operational Excellence and Security were identified as focus areas.

The Operational Excellence pillar prioritizes continually running and monitoring systems to deliver business value, including best practices for using AWS CloudWatch. AWS CloudWatch is a monitoring and observability service that helps you collect and track metrics, collect and monitor log files, and set alarms. It is a critical tool for maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring LUMA Law’s AWS resources perform as expected. These best practices ensure LUMA Law’s AWS environment is reliable, resilient, and effectively managed and monitored to meet business needs.

By addressing the Security pillar, the customer can implement further security safeguards to improve their security and compliance. It encompasses best practices related to AWS Identity Access Management (IAM), data protection, network security, monitoring, and incident response. Security remediations involved identifying and addressing security vulnerabilities and weaknesses in LUMA Law’s AWS architecture. This, in turn, enhanced their overall security posture through patching vulnerabilities, implementing security policies, and responding to security incidents.

A Trend Micro Cloud One – Conformity assessment was conducted to identify any areas of improvement and risk. The Silicon Overdrive Team implemented the identified improvements and additional security safeguards to improve their POPIA, GDPR, and ISO 27001 compliance.

Further to the above, we helped optimize the LUMA Law legal chatbot, which is powered by Amazon Lex. Silicon Overdrive implemented an Amazon CloudWatch dashboard to visualize activity and interactions between LUMA Law’s chatbot and their customers.

The Outcome

LUMA Law gained valuable insights into AWS Cloud management and system operations through the Well-Architected Framework Review process.

The customer also acquired a deeper understanding of workload management aligned with their business objectives, improving their cloud operations and management, security and compliance.

Grace Gichanga, Founder of LUMA Law, said, “The team executed their mandate with professionalism and efficiency. They understood the present and future needs of the business and went above and beyond to deliver a platform that exceeded all expectations.”
