Modernizing Rhea Soil Health Management’s Cloud Platform on AWS

About the Customer

Rhea Soil Health Management is an agricultural technology company providing innovative soil health and farm management solutions. Its platform supports farmers and agronomists with data-driven insights, helping to optimise soil health decisions and improve farm productivity across the sector.

The Challenge

Rhea Soil Health Management runs a distributed application architecture: a Django-based backend connected to a MySQL database, a Next.js-based frontend interfacing with a PostgreSQL database, and a chatbot system, with the backend and frontend both containerized. This stack was running in production on DigitalOcean, a setup that presented limitations in scalability, uptime reliability, and integration with modern cloud-native tooling.

Manual infrastructure management had also proven time-consuming and inefficient, hindering the team’s agility as the business grew. As a new, first-of-its-kind cloud environment for Rhea, the project called for the applications to be migrated to a secure, best-practice production environment in the AWS US East (N. Virginia) Region.

The Solution

Silicon Overdrive proposed Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) as the container orchestration platform for both the Django backend and Next.js frontend workloads, paired with Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for MySQL to support the Django backend and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL to support the Next.js frontend, simplifying operational management and improving reliability.

Working in joint capacity with the Rhea Soil team, Silicon Overdrive architected, built, and migrated Rhea’s new production environment, deploying AWS services and resources according to the agreed guideline architecture. The build-out included:

  • ECS Tasks, ECR repositories, and AWS WAF, configured and validated against AWS security controls
  • An ECS service running the EMQX MQTT messaging broker, integrating IoT and real-time messaging into the Rhea and Agripad environments, including a dedicated ECR repository for the EMQX MQTT image, purpose-built IAM roles and policies, a private ECS service deployment, and updated Application Load Balancer routing so IoT data could be ingested and routed to AWS
  • Amazon CloudFront, fronting the web application via DNS so it loads securely and performantly for end users
  • Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS), accessible to both web and application containers
  • Secure connectivity between application containers and the RDS-hosted databases, plus accessible external integration points from the web/application layer
  • Advisory support for the database migration to RDS
  • An AWS Backup and Restore Policy document, with backup schedules implemented as agreed with Rhea, and a backup restore validation test conducted to confirm recoverability

The entire environment was provisioned using Terraform, and the resulting deployable package released to Rhea as a project deliverable, allows the environment to be redeployed to any supported AWS Region in future.

The Outcome

Rhea Soil Health Management now runs its Django and Next.js applications, database layers, and IoT messaging on a purpose-built, secure AWS production environment in US East (N. Virginia) its first cloud environment, built for scale from the outset.

The web application is served securely and performantly via CloudFront, application containers connect securely to RDS and to EFS, and external integration points are reachable from the application layer. IoT and real-time data now routes through a dedicated, private EMQX MQTT broker running on ECS. A documented backup and restore policy is in place and has been validated through testing, giving Rhea a proven recovery path.

The engagement delivered a Trend Vision One™ Cyber/Cloud Risk Exposure Management GDPR compliance score of 95% or higher across all environments containing production or sensitive data, and left Rhea with a reusable Terraform deployment package that can redeploy the environment to any supported AWS Region as the business expands.

Clinton Nyaore, Rhea Soil Health Management said, “The migration was handled very professionally. I particularly appreciated the team’s responsiveness to our technical requirements. No major areas for improvement to highlight at this stage; the execution aligned well with our expectations for Rhea’s infrastructure.”
