Hatfield Online School’s learning platform, built on Moodle, was hosted within a third-party managed AWS account. This setup limited visibility, control, and the ability to resolve ongoing performance and stability issues.
As the platform grew in usage and importance, these constraints began to impact user experience and operational efficiency. Persistent technical challenges, combined with limited ownership of the environment, created risk for the school’s ability to reliably deliver educational content at scale.
To continue supporting students effectively, Hatfield required a more stable, scalable, and transparent cloud environment aligned with best practices.
Hatfield Online School made the strategic decision to take full ownership of its AWS environment and partner with a specialist to redesign its platform for performance, scalability, and long-term sustainability.
This shift was not only about resolving immediate technical issues, but about gaining control, improving governance, and establishing a future-ready foundation to support digital education delivery.
Silicon Overdrive partnered with Hatfield Online School to migrate the platform into a new, fully owned AWS account and redesign the environment in line with best-practice architecture.
The engagement focused on improving application performance, enhancing availability, and introducing a more scalable infrastructure to support growing demand. The environment was optimized using Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling to dynamically adjust resources based on platform demand, ensuring improved reliability and consistent user experience. Amazon RDS was implemented to provide a managed, scalable database foundation for the Moodle learning platform.
Security and governance were strengthened through improved network visibility, access controls, and monitoring capabilities.
The platform was restructured to better leverage AWS services, ensuring more reliable delivery of learning content while giving the Hatfield team full visibility and control over their environment.
