Lupiya – Migration to AWS

About the Customer

Lupiya’s goal is to expand access to credit and lower the cost of borrowing for millions of Zambians.

They aim to level the playing field for all Zambians by offering low cost lending products and attainable options for security. They try to distance themselves from traditional lenders by being accessible to marginalized and unbanked communities and offering lending practices that are transparent and fair. More than profit, they are driven by creating a landscape that promotes an economically empowered Zambia. Their contribution is the application of fintech to bridge the financial gap.

The Challenge

Lupiya was initially hosted at IBM Cloud, but as the company grew they wanted to leverage a cloud platform that could scale with them and meet their security goals. After meeting with the AWS Startup team and the Silicon Overdrive team, Lupiya decided to migrate their environment to AWS.

When Lupiya was hosting their environment at IBM, they had deployed their workload on a single Ubuntu Kubernetes cluster.

The Solution

To ensure that the new environment could scale for future growth, Silicon Overdrive redeployed it in an Amazon ECS AWS Fargate serverless environment which would allow for high availability and auto-scaling.

AWS Fargate is a serverless compute engine for containers that works with both Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). AWS Fargate makes it easy for customers to focus on building applications. AWS Fargate removes the need to provision and manage servers, lets customers specify and pay for resources per application, and improves security through application isolation by design.

Being in the finance industry, security was a top priority and as such the Silicon Overdrive team ensured that the new environment would comply with AWS Security best practices to better safeguard customer data.

The Outcome

Since moving to AWS, Lupiya has ensured that their apps are running in a secure, scalable and highly-available best practice environment, and they have also been able to reduce their monthly spend thanks to the utilization of the serverless deployment.
