Magaliesberg Pharmaceuticals — AWS Well-Architected Framework Review

About the Customer

Magaliesberg Pharmaceuticals is a buyer of pharmaceutical products.

The Challenge

Magaliesberg Pharmaceuticals initially deployed their environment using a basic, out-of-the-box software solution. They later engaged Silicon Overdrive to develop custom software under a support agreement.

The primary workload involved was a single pharmacy workload focused on storing and accessing prescriptions. Magaliesberg Pharmaceuticals needed to improve their systems to efficiently help customers while maintaining a strong focus on cost optimization due to their small monthly spend.

The Solution

To address the technical issues and improve the system, several steps were taken. The AWS Team suggested running a Well-Architected Framework Review (WAFR) on Magaliesberg Pharmaceuticals’ two small workloads. The implementation was carried out on a budget, focusing on cost-effectiveness. This included setting up a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and enabling flow logs.

The Software Team created new custom software to meet the customer’s specific needs. The software development process included ensuring the Continuous Delivery/Continuous Integration (CDC) pipeline followed best practices.

Improved security posture was achieved without increasing costs significantly, and additional services were added, resulting in a small amount of savings on the monthly spend.

AutoScaling was implemented with a more hands-on approach due to the custom nature of the software. A root cause analysis document was created and maintained by the Software Team, documenting best practices as they progressed. The implementation resulted in a much better security posture for Magaliesberg Pharmaceuticals, with a slight reduction in monthly costs.

The custom software and optimized environment allowed the customer to efficiently manage their prescription storage and access needs. The documentation of best practices and the creation of a root cause analysis document also provided a solid foundation for future improvements and maintenance.

The Outcome

The AWS WAFR resulted in a much better security posture for Magaliesberg Pharmaceuticals, with a slight reduction in monthly costs. The custom software and optimized environment allowed the customer to efficiently manage their prescription storage and access needs.

Documenting best practices and creating a root cause analysis document provided a solid foundation for future improvements and maintenance.
