The Starter Pack Company – Migrating Microsoft SQL Server Workload to AWS

About the Customer

Since 2007, The Starter Pack Company has grown from a specialized SIM card supplier to a comprehensive provider of prepaid solutions, including SIM cards, RICA services, airtime, data, and electricity in South Africa. They aim to empower South Africans with entrepreneurial opportunities through reliable connections and innovative products at competitive prices.

The Starter Pack Company fosters lasting partnerships and aims to drive growth for the community and stakeholders.

The Challenge

The Starter Pack Company approached Silicon Overdrive for assistance in migrating its custom software application from its current external vendor managed AWS environment to Amazon Web Services (AWS). The custom software application required a Microsoft SQL Server database. The customer required the workload to be secure and compliant, significantly focusing on cost-effectiveness. A lift-and-shift approach was needed to keep costs low.

The Solution

Silicon Overdrive utilized AWS services to achieve a secure, compliant, cost-effective AWS workload for The Starter Pack Company.

Key to this migration was AWS Control Tower and its Landing Zone feature, which simplified the complexities of AWS, speeding up the onboarding process and laid a foundation for future growth. The workload was designed modularly to ensure seamless scalability as the customer expanded its customer base.

Our AWS engineers implemented AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF), Amazon CloudWatch, and AWS CloudTrail for enhanced security, real-time monitoring, and compliance tracking. Security was further strengthened by enforcing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) across all IAM user accounts and employing Terraform, Trusted Advisor, Key Management Service (KMS), and S3 to protect data in transit and at rest.

By deploying the single-AZ and multi-AZ EC2 instances in private subnets within a custom VPC, we were able to strengthen the workload’s security posture. AWS GuardDuty for threat detection, and SQL Server on EC2 instances for seamless data management were also deployed.

AWS Config and AWS Systems Manager were leveraged to automate resource provisioning and streamline operations, enhancing overall operational efficiency.

The Outcome

By deploying an array of best practice AWS services, Silicon Overdrive’s migration of the custom software application to AWS, established a secure and compliant multi-account AWS workload.

Adopting Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all IAM user accounts and utilizing Terraform, Trusted Advisor, KMS, and S3 further enhanced security and operational efficiency.

Moreover, the workload’s modular design facilitated effortless scalability, positioning The Starter Pack Company for future growth and innovation in delivering prepaid solutions to empower South Africans with reliable connections and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Andrew Murray, CCO/CIO at The Starter Pack Company, said, “Was attentive and patient in dealing with 1st time AWS users. Whilst the solution is not complex, there were some changes to scope made as we learnt the capabilities in AWS and the partner engineers better understood what we were trying to accomplish. The project has been delivered on time and on budget and we look forward to furthering our partnership with Silicon Overdrive.” [sic]
