Xolani Health — Securing and Optimizing AI-Driven Healthcare

About the Customer

Xolani Health is a Nigerian-based AI health company dedicated to augmenting healthcare with advanced AI solutions. Its flagship product, XOLANI BRIDGE, is a teleradiology platform that connects hospitals in Nigeria and across Africa to a global network of radiologists, ensuring timely and accurate medical imaging interpretations. Xolani Health is revolutionizing regional healthcare access by enhancing clinical workflows with AI-driven solutions.

The Challenge

Xolani Health had three existing workloads in the AWS cloud and contacted Silicon Overdrive, an AWS Premier Tier Partner, to evaluate them against the AWS Well-Architected Framework.

The main objective was to focus on cost optimization, as Xolani Health needed to effectively manage expenses and maintain financial efficiency across all three workloads.

Xolani Health aimed to collaborate closely with the Silicon Overdrive team to enhance their skills and effectively manage their workloads following best practices going forward.

The Solution

Silicon Overdrive conducted a comprehensive Well-Architected Framework Review on the three workloads. While the team initially focused on cost optimization, the WAFR identified several areas that needed remediation, particularly regarding security and reliability.

Substantial cost savings were a key outcome of the project, facilitated by migrating resources from the Cape Town Region to the Ireland Region.

Additionally, cost optimization was improved by identifying and eliminating unused or underutilized resources, right-sizing instances, and implementing a cost-effective Compute Savings Plan. These measures ensured that Xolani Health only paid for the resources they needed, significantly reducing unnecessary expenses.

Silicon Overdrive implemented several remediations to strengthen security; workloads were migrated from public to private subnets, databases were encrypted, and NACLs were optimized. Least privilege access was enforced, IAM policies were reviewed, compliance was documented, access keys were rotated, and GuardDuty and AWS CloudTrail were configured. MFA was enabled, and Amazon CloudWatch was deployed for enhanced monitoring.

This comprehensive approach enhanced security and improved the efficiency and performance of Xolani Health’s AWS workloads.

The project involved proactive collaboration from Gabriel Onyeaka, Full Stack Engineer at Xolani Health, who engaged with the Silicon Overdrive team to maximize Xolani Health’s learning and ensure successful implementation of all the remediations.

The Outcome

The collaboration resulted in a significantly more secure, reliable, and cost-optimized environment for Xolani Health.

The client was upskilled on the AWS Well-Architected Framework, allowing them to better manage their workload environment going forward. The proactive involvement of Xolani Health’s team facilitated a smooth and efficient remediation process.

Through the implementation of cost saving initiatives, including Reserved Instances and Compute Savings Plans, Silicon Overdrive reduced Xolani Health’s monthly AWS spend by 38%. These cost optimization measures led to a more financially efficient setup, allowing Xolani Health to allocate resources more effectively and reduce overall operational costs.

Enhancing security measures led to a more robust and secure environment, enabling the efficient protection of sensitive data and mitigation of potential threats.

The project underscored the importance of clear communication and collaboration in achieving security, operational excellence, and cost efficiency.
