Apliso Plus – AWS Well-Architected Framework Review

About the Customer

Apliso Plus is a pioneering Business Management Consultancy with over 20 years of expertise in the ISO Management System field. Through their extensive experience, they have gained deep insights into what businesses require to effectively manage compliance. Apliso Plus specializes in creating streamlined, interactive, and integrated systems that handle processes, policies, procedures, monitoring and measuring, resource management, and risk management.

The Challenge

Apliso Plus, a rapidly growing enterprise, faced the challenge of an on-premises solution that no longer met their expanding needs and evolving security requirements. Recognizing the limitations, they decided to reassess their needs and migrate to the AWS cloud. This transition significantly improved their scalability, cost-efficiency, and security, all while adhering to industry best practices for compliance. The primary focus of the migration was to strengthen and enhance their security and compliance posture, ensuring they could support their continued growth effectively.

The Solution

Silicon Overdrive performed an AWS Well-Architected Framework Review (AWS WAFR) on the migrated workloads. The team assessed and evaluated the current infrastructure, including applications and dependencies.

AWS Well-Architected security best practice remediations included enabling AWS
CloudWatch dashboards to continuously monitor system performance and relevant KPI metrics to detect anomalies and automate responses to critical events.

The AWS Team reviewed the IAM Policies and access control of all users. AWS MFA root token was applied on all accounts, allowing only necessary permissions and ensuring compliance with the principle of least privilege (PoLP).

Further AWS security enhancements also included the enablement of VPC Flow Logs, monitoring and analyses on network traffic, assists in identifying and troubleshooting network issues, as well as recognising any potential security threats. AWS CloudTrail was used to track user activity and changes across the AWS infrastructure, ensuring transparency and accountability. AWS Config tracked configuration changes, assisted in maintaining compliance and identifying configuration drift. Encryption at rest for data stored in AWS services was implemented to ensure data security and compliance with industry standards.

As part of the review, cost optimization process was conducted which is aimed at reducing unnecessary expenses and maximizing the value of their cloud infrastructure.

It was also critical that AWS Backup and restore policy was implemented to safeguard Apliso Plus’s data, ensuring their business continuity, meeting compliance requirements, managing costs, and maintaining operational efficiency. It provided them a systematic approach to data protection, ensuring that their data is secure, recoverable, and managed in alignment with their business objectives.

A Trend Micro Cloud One – Conformity assessment was also done to ensure AWS security controls validate Apliso Plus’ security and compliance posture.

The Outcome

Silicon Overdrive ensured best practice implementations and proactive security measures were taken to allow Apliso Plus to operate in a highly available, fault tolerant, and optimized environment. Apliso Plus can confidently operate within a secure, resilient, and efficient cloud infrastructure.
