Jericho Systems — AWS Well-Architected Framework Review (WAFR)

About the Customer

Jericho Systems is a team of highly skilled and qualified developers specializing in IT and electronic system solutions. With a focus on electronic and software development tailored to the operational needs of its clients, Jericho Systems leverages its extensive network of trusted partners to offer a competitive platform within the industry.

Their wealth of experience in systems engineering and development has yielded numerous successful products and systems. Jericho Systems caters to clients across diverse sectors, including financial technology (fintech), mining, security, and agriculture.

The Challenge

As a dynamic player in the IT and electronic systems solutions sector, operating within a highly competitive environment, Jericho Systems identified the need for additional technology compliance and contacted Silicon Overdrive, an AWS Advanced Partner, to conduct an AWS Well-Architected Framework Review (WAFR).

Identifying areas for improvement was crucial for Jericho Systems to meet their customers’ expectations in terms of security, compliance, availability and affordability of services.

The Solution

Silicon Overdrive utilized the six pillars of the AWS WAFR to evaluate Jericho Systems’ existing workloads against industry best practices, identifying areas of improvement.

The Security pillar protects information and systems and ensures that resources and data are secure. It encompasses various best practices related to AWS Identity and Access management (IAM), data protection, network security, monitoring, and incident response. Security remediations involve identifying and addressing security vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the customer’s AWS architecture. This, in turn, enhances the customer’s overall security posture through patching vulnerabilities, implementing security policies, and responding to security incidents.

Silicon Overdrive conducted a Trend Micro Cloud One – Conformity compliance assessment to identify risks and optimizable configurations for remediation.

The Operational Excellence pillar prioritizes continually running and monitoring systems to deliver business value, including best practices for using Amazon CloudWatch. CloudWatch is a monitoring and observability service that helps you collect and track metrics, collect and monitor log files, and set alarms. It is a crucial tool for maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring the customer’s AWS resources perform as expected.

Silicon Overdrive’s team conducted a detailed cost optimization assessment, examining the organization’s AWS resource utilization, spending patterns, and potential for cost savings.

Instance provisioning focus areas were identified, and right-sized AWS services were based on actual usage patterns, resulting in more efficient resource allocation aligned with workload requirements.

Jericho’s baseline workloads were identified and categorized during the second phase, Silicon Overdrive identified which Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances and Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) databases could be optimized through AWS Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (RIs). By leveraging these commitments, Jericho Systems achieved cost predictability and optimized its long-term workload costs.

The results of the WAFR prompted the implementation of tagging and cost attribution practices to gain detailed insights into Jericho System’s AWS resource usage and spending.

Tagging involves adding metadata, or “tags,” to resources such as EC2 instances, RDS databases, S3 buckets, and more. Tags provided additional context about each resource, including ownership, purpose, and environment. Tags emerged as a powerful tool for categorizing and organizing resources effectively.

Silicon Overdrive meticulously implemented recommended remediations and enhancements, resulting in a highly available system adhering to best practices. This benchmark aimed to provide Jericho Systems with top-tier architectural guidelines, ensuring secure, efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable workloads within the AWS Cloud.

The Outcome

After completing the WAFR and implementing the recommended remediations, Jericho Systems experienced a remarkable enhancement in its AWS Cloud infrastructure. They are better aligned with current design principles and industry best practices, bolstering their workload’s reliability, security, and compliance with industry best practices.

Jericho Systems adapted its operations to encompass the pillars of the AWS Well-Architected Framework, demonstrating a newfound commitment to comprehensive concerns. This transformation improved their insights into workload performance, enhanced control objectives, disaster recovery capabilities, efficiency, and security.

Jericho Systems have since shifted their operations to consider separation of concerns across the six pillars of the WAFR. Jericho Systems has also gained greater insight into their workload performance and improved their control objectives, disaster recovery, efficiency, and security.
